Gneis Süd

History & character

From Moor Meadows to Urban Living Space

Gneis Süd developed after World War II when the Eichethofsiedlung and Birkensiedlung, separated by the Morzgerwald, grew due to the settlement of refugees. Before development, the area was characterized by agriculturally less productive moor meadows, known for their rich biodiversity. Siberian irises and various orchid species once thrived here. The surrounding forest, formerly known as 'Grödiger Eichet,' was dominated by oaks and provided materials for the Almkanal. Today, a walking and cycling path along the Almkanal connects Gneis Süd with Salzburg's old town and the Mönchsberg, giving the district a tranquil, nature-oriented character.
