History & character
From Roman Times to the Largest Village
Wals-Siezenheim has a long history that dates back to Roman times. The name Siezenheim may originate from a Roman noble named Sizo. While Wals was first mentioned in 927, Siezenheim was documented later. In the 12th century, Wals was assigned to the parish of Siezenheim. The area underwent various political changes, including the secularization of the Archdiocese of Salzburg and its affiliation with Austria. In 1948, the municipality of Siezenheim was renamed Wals-Siezenheim, uniting the two localities. The population grew from about 1,000 in 1947 to around 11,000 in 2001.
Today, Wals-Siezenheim is the largest municipality in Austria not elevated to market or town status and is closely linked to the city of Salzburg. Its location in the Flachgau and proximity to the state capital make the municipality attractive. Wals-Siezenheim is often referred to as a commuter belt community, representing the transition between urban and rural areas, and is part of the Salzburg regional association.
