History & character
From Roman Estates to Modern Housing
Taxham is a historically significant district of Salzburg, built on ancient cultural land. West of the Europark shopping center, the remains of a Roman estate can be found, along with Iron Age and Bronze Age artifacts. The name Taxham, first mentioned in 1409, derives from 'Taxen', meaning coniferous forest, and refers to a dwelling in the conifer forest. In the 20th century, Taxham underwent a significant transformation: starting in 1953, numerous apartments were built here to address the housing shortage following World War II. The Taxham settlement, which began in 1954, provided many people with a new home and quickly developed into a vibrant satellite town with over 10,000 residents in its early years. Today, Taxham is a quiet district featuring a mix of residential areas, schools, and churches, while still preserving traces of its historical roots.
