History & character
From Church Settlement to Modern Community
Liefering is a district in the northwest of Salzburg, with its name first mentioned in the 8th century as 'Liueringe'. The naming indicates an earlier dwelling associated with a person named Lifero. Archaeological finds show that the area was inhabited as far back as the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. The current parish church, dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, was first documented around 790 and is a significant historical structure in the district. Over the centuries, Liefering evolved from a church settlement into a bustling place, gaining importance in the 19th century with the construction of the Kaiserin-Elisabeth-Westbahn. Today, Liefering is the most populous district of Salzburg after Lehen, with around 14,500 residents. The district has developed into a quiet residential area, characterized by its proximity to nature and green spaces around Mühlbach and Altglan. The clear delineation by natural boundaries like the Salzach and Saalach shapes the character of Liefering, offering both rural charm and urban amenities.
