History & character
From Celtic Settlement to Border Community
The area of Bergheim has been settled since the late Paleolithic period, as evidenced by findings at Muntiglerhügel. The Celts settled the region in the 1st century BC, followed by the Romans in 15 BC. From this period, Roman estates in Kerath and Kemating still exist. Around 650, the Bavarians began settling the area, and the name Bergheim is likely derived from this time. The first documented mention dates back to 927. In the 12th and 13th centuries, Bergheim held a significant position but was managed multiple times over the centuries and was owned by the Archdiocese of Salzburg by the end of the 14th century. The destruction during the Napoleonic Wars and the transition to Austria in 1816 shaped the town's history. Today, Bergheim is a quiet community with a population of 5,790, directly bordering the state capital Salzburg and characterized by the Plainberg and the pilgrimage site of Maria Plain.
