History & character
From Bronze Age Settlement to District
Itzling, a district in the north of Salzburg, has a long history that dates back to the Bronze Age. The name Itzling derives from the Bavarian settlement and once designated a settlement site. In the past, Itzling was a small village on a minor road connecting Salzburg and Bergheim, which was gradually settled only in the Middle Ages. The first farmsteads emerged after the drainage of the Itzlinger Moor in the 17th century. By 1800, Itzling was still a sleepy hamlet with a few farms and no church of its own. The development of the area accelerated with the construction of the Westbahn and Giselabahn in the 19th century, leading to a rapid increase in population. Itzling was incorporated into the city of Salzburg in 1935 and 1939.
