Schallmoos

History & character

From Marshland to Modern Residential Area

Schallmoos is a district of Salzburg, with its name referring to the originally marshy landscape. Until the early 17th century, the marshlands remained largely untouched until Prince-Archbishop Paris Lodron ordered the cultivation of the marsh. This occurred in the context of the Thirty Years' War, when soldiers and Dutch engineers drained the area and transformed it into agricultural land. After drainage, numerous farms emerged, some of which are still preserved today. The Robinighof and the Rauchenbichlerhof are examples of historical buildings that reflect the region's development. In the 20th century, the area became increasingly urbanized, evolving into a heterogeneous district with residential areas, trade, and commercial enterprises.

Today, Schallmoos is characterized by a mix of old and new structures. The buildings range from city center houses to modern office buildings and residential blocks. With around 11,000 inhabitants, Schallmoos is a vibrant district that offers proximity to the old town and a diverse infrastructure.
