History & character

UNESCO World Heritage of Salzburg's Old Town

The Historic Centre of the City of Salzburg, also known as the Old Town, is a significant part of Austria's cultural heritage. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site on December 5, 1996. This honor is based on the unique development of architecture and urban planning that spans from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. Particularly notable is the Baroque bishop's city, which impresses with its cohesive ensemble effect. The Old Town area includes both the left and right sides of the Salzach River, the Inner Nonntal, as well as the Mönchsberg and the Hohensalzburg Fortress. The entire core zone covers 236 hectares and is almost identical to the district of the Old Town. To preserve its historical character, the Old Town is subject to strict protection under the Salzburg Old Town Preservation Act and numerous other monument regulations. The 487-hectare buffer zone also plays a crucial role in protecting the historical cityscape and existing green spaces.
