History & character
From Hohe Riedenburg to Urban Settlement
Riedenburg is a district of Salzburg that stretches around the Rainberg, once known as 'Hohe Riedenburg'. The name derives from the protective height surrounded by reeds. The area has been inhabited since the Neolithic era and housed a significant settlement during the Celtic La Tène period. The district is located between several other neighborhoods and covers about 210 hectares, home to around 7000 residents today. Historically, Riedenburg was characterized by agricultural use, especially after the draining of the Riedmoor in the 17th century. The development of the area began in the 18th century, leading to the construction of residential buildings. Today, Riedenburg combines longstanding structures with modern residential complexes, offering a quiet green environment shaped by the Leopoldskroner Weiher and the Schloss Leopoldskron.
