History & character
From Benedictine Ownership to Urban Residential Area
Nonntal, a district of Salzburg, has its roots in the Middle Ages when the area was largely owned by the Benedictine monastery of St. Nonnberg. The Nonnberg, which gave the district its name, was probably settled as early as Celtic times. In Inner Nonntal, traces of an ancient Roman house have been discovered, indicating the area's long history. The first residents were mainly servants of the monastery, including laborers, maids, and craftsmen. Over time, Salzburg citizens also settled here, contributing to the gradual expansion of the town. In 1839, Nonntal was described as a suburb with 81 houses and about 436 inhabitants, just a short walk from the city. Today, Nonntal is a quiet district with around 4000 residents and an area of 126.6 hectares. The parish church of St. Erhard, built in Baroque style, shapes the local landscape and serves as a reminder of the area's historical significance. Nonntal offers a blend of rural charm and urban accessibility, making it ideal for those looking to live near the old town.
