Anif

History & character

From Swamp Water to Prosperous Community

Anif is a municipality in the Salzburg region with an interesting history that dates back to Celtic times. The name Anif, originally derived from *An-apa through *Anava to Anua, means 'swamp water'. The names of local areas, such as Niederalm, also have Celtic roots, referring to water bodies and mountains. As early as 788, a church in Anua was documented, indicating the early significance of the place. In 1894, Anif was separated from Grödig and received its first mayor, Matthias Schnöll. Since then, Anif has developed into a prosperous municipality, now regarded as one of the best residential locations near the city of Salzburg. The 4432 residents (as of January 1, 2026) enjoy the quiet and nature-rich environment that Anif offers.
