Morzg

History & character

From the Estate of Marcius to a District

Morzg is a district in the south of Salzburg, with a history dating back to the Neolithic period. The original name *Marciacum indicates a Roman estate that was first documented in 720. Morzg developed from a rural cluster village and retained its village character despite the villa constructions of the 19th century and the larger residential buildings of the 20th century. The floodplain areas, whose names recall former estates, were also historically significant. In 1939, Morzg was incorporated into the city of Salzburg, with some parts already included in 1935. Today, about 2500 residents live in Morzg on an area of 460.8 ha. The district is characterized by a quiet, rural atmosphere and is close to landscape recreation areas such as the landscape garden of Hellbrunn.
