Hallein

History & character

From Salt Mining to Cultural City

Hallein is a town with a long history that dates back to the Neolithic period when salt springs were already being used. The Celts settled the area around 600 BC and began mining rock salt, making Hallein an important economic center. Salt mining shaped the town for centuries and led to its elevation to city status between 1218 and 1232. The name Hallein derives from the small salt pan and highlights the historical significance of salt extraction. Today, the Hallein salt mine is one of the oldest mines in the world and is used as a tourist show mine. Additionally, the town is home to one of the most significant Celtic museums in Europe, documenting the rich history of the region. Today, Hallein presents itself as a vibrant town with 21,607 inhabitants, referred to as a cultural city, educational city, and industrial city. Its location by the Salzach River and the surrounding nature, including the Tennengebirge and the Göll massif, contribute to the quality of life. Hallein offers a variety of recreational opportunities and cultural offerings that attract both locals and visitors.
