History & character
From Roman Trade Route to Residential Area
Puch bei Hallein, first mentioned in 930 as pouche, has a long history that dates back to Roman times. A Roman milestone found at the cemetery wall marks the 7th mile of the trade route Juvavum – Teurnia. In the Middle Ages, Puchstein Castle was used to monitor salt shipping and later transformed into a rental house. The name of the town changed several times until the current designation was adopted in 1905. The parish church, a Gothic structure from the 14th century, reflects the historical significance of the area. Today, Puch bei Hallein is an attractive municipality with 4911 inhabitants, evolving into a popular residential area. The community offers a good mix of rural charm and proximity to the city of Salzburg, making it appealing for both those seeking recreation and families. The surrounding nature, characterized by forests and mountains, invites outdoor activities and enhances its character as a local recreation area.
