History & character
From Farmsteads to Modern Residential Area
Gneis, first mentioned in 1212 as Gnals, likely derives from the Latin term for drainage ditches. Historically, Gneis was characterized by individual farmsteads for centuries, situated along a minor road connection to Berchtesgaden. The region was primarily used for agriculture, with several estates such as Groß-Pechbrocker-Gut and Pfeifergut contributing to the settlement structure. Over time, Gneis developed into a district of Salzburg, which now has over 5,000 residents.
Today, Gneis is a quiet district characterized by its proximity to natural and landscape protection areas like Leopoldskroner Moos. The central Berchtesgadner Straße serves as the main axis of the settlement, while the surroundings are dominated by meadows and fields. Gneis combines rural charm with modern residential culture and features both old and new churches that reflect the community and cultural diversity of the district.
