History & character

From Fertile Community to Maxglan

Maxglan is a district of the capital city of Salzburg, with roots tracing back to the Stone Age. The name derives from the Glan stream, which in the early Middle Ages served as a designation for the settlement. Originally known as St. Maximilian, Maxglan evolved over the centuries from a prosperous farming village into an independent municipality. In 1935, the majority of Maxglan was incorporated into the city of Salzburg, significantly influencing its development as a district. Today, with around 14,000 inhabitants, Maxglan is the third largest district of Salzburg and is characterized by a quiet, residential atmosphere that combines urban life with elements of nature.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. At the foot of the Mönchsberg and Kapuzinerberg this weighs heavily: in winter both sit at 25 to 28 degrees, higher than the sun ever climbs there (just under 19).
