History & character
From Mill Village to Old Suburb
Mülln, one of the oldest districts of Salzburg, developed from a mill village and was first mentioned in 790 as "ad molendina." The mills were fed by water from the Riedenburg marsh and the adjacent Wildmoos. Over the centuries, the settlement at the northern foot of the Mönchsberg received its current name and was fortified for military protection in the past. The Augustinian Church, serving as the parish church, was built in the 15th century and still features elements of Gothic and Baroque architecture. The former monastery of the Augustinian Hermits, which established a brewery in 1621, is now known as a tavern and hosts Austria's largest beer garden.
Today, Mülln is home to a small community of around 1000 residents. The district is characterized by historic buildings and its proximity to the Salzach River. The old suburb, with its charming atmosphere and the prominent Müllner parish church, offers a quiet living environment while remaining close to the vibrant city life of Salzburg.
