History & character
From Bastion Grounds to Residential Area
Neustadt, also known as Andräviertel, emerged after the demolition of the large bastions around the Andräkirche. This area was once characterized by military fortifications that were dismantled in the 19th century. The original Andräkirche, a Gothic structure, underwent several transformations and was ultimately demolished in 1861. In its place, a neo-Gothic church was built, which was inaugurated in 1898. The Kurgarten, now a popular park, was once the site of one of the powerful artillery bastions built for the protection of the Old Town.
Today, Neustadt is primarily a residential area with a suburban character, marked by Gründerzeit villas and large apartment buildings. The district is part of the buffer zone of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Historic Center of the City of Salzburg and is home to around 4000 to 4500 residents. The architectural diversity and proximity to the Salzach River characterize this district, which offers both tranquility and good access to the Old Town.
