History & character
From Froschheim to Elisabeth-Vorstadt
Elisabeth-Vorstadt, formerly known as Froschheim, developed after the regulation of the Salzach River and the demolition of the Lodron city fortifications in 1861. The name Froschheim, which refers to the numerous frogs and frequent floods, was already noted in the oldest survey plan from 1789. Originally, the district consisted of small farming hamlets and underwent significant urbanization with the construction of the Salzburg main train station and railway facilities. The renaming of Froschheimer Hauptstraße to Elisabethstraße occurred in honor of Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary in 1904. Today, Elisabeth-Vorstadt is a district that combines urban residential blocks and high-rise buildings with villa-like residential areas, characterized by greenery. The district, home to about 7,500 residents, offers a blend of proximity to the Salzach River and urban infrastructure, making it an interesting residential area in Salzburg.
