History & character
From Wet Woodland to Urban Landscape
Lehen, a densely populated district in the north of Salzburg, derives its name possibly from the Middle High German lēhen, meaning 'lease' or 'a good granted to a nobleman', or from the word Lohe, which describes a wet woodland. In the 19th century, the core area of Lehen was characterized by the hamlets around Rauchmühle, Annahof, and Lürzerhof. Until the city expansion in the 1930s, Lehen was sparsely populated, as it mostly consisted of a floodplain of the Salzach and Glan rivers. Building activities began in 1874, and in 1902, Ignaz-Harrer-Straße was established, which now serves as the main traffic artery. The social housing development from 1924 to 1930 significantly increased the population and shaped the district's image.
Today, Lehen is characterized by old residential buildings and a vibrant urban life. Traffic congestion during peak hours on the main roads is a notable feature, while the parks and historical buildings, such as the Villa Rauchmühle and Lürzerhof, provide insight into the district's history.
