Cool
Up the Kapuzinerberg, into the cool city forest
Where does summer stay bearable when the city heats up?
From the Linzer Gasse, stairways climb steeply into the mountain forest, past the Capuchin monastery and up in switchbacks to the Franziskischlössl. On hot days the Kapuzinerberg is the air conditioning of the Salzach’s right bank: dense old forest that even chamois call home. The descent takes the eastern slope into the quiet residential streets of Fürberg.
Getting there: 3, 5, 10 to Salzburg Rathaus, 183 m to the start. Way back from Salzburg Fürbergstraße (10, 12), 148 m.
The route and its data
The coloured line is the walk, routed on the real pedestrian network. Toggle a data layer, or tap anywhere on the map to see trees, noise, heat and travel times for that exact spot.
Tap the numbered stops for what makes each spot special, or tap anywhere for the full “what’s here?”.
Every 100 metres of the route, classified from the real data: green spaces, the official noise map, footfall.
About 224 m of climbing and 214 m of descent, between 427 and 635 m above sea level. Sampled every 25 m from open elevation data.
For anyone looking to live right of the Salzach, from Neustadt to Schallmoos: the hill is the cool escape at the door. The stairs demand legs, not equipment.
The stairways are steep and slippery when wet, and in the evening the forest is lonely. The homes at its foot trade closeness to the hill for a slope: there is no view without a climb.
What changes along the way
Every 100 metres of the walk, sampled against wohnwahn’s data. The bars run from the start (left) to the finish (right). In short: 61% quiet · very well connected.
Values are 0 to 100 per 250 m cell. Parks and water have no residential cell of their own, so those stretches read the nearest neighbourhood. Source: City of Salzburg tree register, heat model from surface sealing, environmental noise map, footfall and own transit routing.
