Green
Across the Mönchsberg, the forest above the old town
How much real green sits right above the centre?
The Mönchsberg is Salzburg’s special case: a wooded ridge in the middle of the city, the Getreidegasse below, forest above. The walk takes the lift at Anton-Neumayr-Platz as a shortcut, passes the Museum der Moderne, crosses the plateau to the Richterhöhe and drops beneath the fortress to Nonnberg Abbey. In between: meadows, old bastions and the city from above, again and again.
Getting there: 1, 10, 8 to Salzburg Mönchsbergaufzug, 45 m to the start. Way back from Salzburg Petersbrunnstraße (5, 25), 182 m.
The route and its data

Every 100 metres of the route, classified from the real data: green spaces, the official noise map, footfall.
About 110 m of climbing and 76 m of descent, between 420 and 503 m above sea level. Sampled every 25 m from open elevation data.
For anyone weighing up the old town or Nonntal: the hill is their green living room. Living right on the hill is rare and priced accordingly, but the walking is everyone’s.
Living right on or by the hill is the rare, expensive exception, and the old town below belongs to the visitors by day. The hill paths themselves are unlit and silent after dark.
What changes along the way
Every 100 metres of the walk, sampled against wohnwahn’s data. The bars run from the start (left) to the finish (right). In short: well shaded by street trees · 100% quiet · very well connected.
Read this first: The green tile below measures how close the inhabited cells sit to large green spaces, and here that value runs low. That is exactly why this walk matters: it leads through the big green the surrounding homes lack.
Values are 0 to 100 per 250 m cell. Parks and water have no residential cell of their own, so those stretches read the nearest neighbourhood. Source: City of Salzburg tree register, heat model from surface sealing, environmental noise map, footfall and own transit routing.
