Gnigl

History & character

From Mill Village to Urban District

Gnigl, originally a mill village and important traffic hub, is located in the northeast of Salzburg. The name derives from the Gniglerbach, which flows through the area. The oldest traces of human settlement date back to the Bronze Age. In the Middle Ages, Gnigl was significant for its water supply to the city and had two historical settlement cores: Obergnigl and Niedergnigl. With the construction of the railway line after 1860, the mill village experienced an economic boom. Following its incorporation into the city of Salzburg in 1935, urban development began, particularly gaining momentum after World War II. Today, about 6,000 people live in Gnigl, a quiet district characterized by its geographical location between hills and its proximity to the city.
