History & character
From Farming Village to Business District
Kasern is a district of the city of Salzburg, with origins dating back to the 13th century. The name Kasern may be connected to the medieval Latin word for 'hut' and could refer to alpine pastures or cheese production. Until the late 19th century, the area was characterized by a few scattered farms located at the foothills of the Plain Mountain. The development of Kasern as a district only began in the 20th century when the bell foundry Oberascher settled here in 1919. In 1939, Kasern was incorporated into the city of Salzburg, leading to increasing urbanization with the construction of the West Autobahn. Today, Kasern is a vibrant business district marked by dense development. Small green spaces are protected, and the district offers good access to transportation networks, including the Salzburg-Nord motorway interchange. The combination of industry and conservation gives Kasern a unique character, making it an interesting place to live in northern Salzburg.
