History & character
From Roman Road to Market Town
Frastanz, a market town in the Feldkirch district, lies along a historic Roman road and has undergone significant changes over the centuries. The Burg Frastafeders, built around 1258, served as a stronghold for the Counts of Werdenberg and secured the route over the Sarojajoch. Despite its brief existence, it was destroyed in the 14th century. Historically significant was the Battle of Frastanz in 1499, one of the decisive confrontations of the Swabian War. From 1805 to 1814, the town belonged to Bavaria before becoming part of Austria again. The long-standing rule of Sonnenberg and the early tax unity with Nenzing shape the town's history until the 18th century. Today, Frastanz is a tranquil community, surrounded by wooded areas and impressive nature reserves that offer both cultural and scenic diversity.
