History & character
From County to Cultural City Hohenems
Hohenems, historically also known as Hohenembs, has a long and multifaceted history. The first documented mention of the noble family of Ems dates back to 1170. In the Middle Ages, the Altems Castle was one of the most significant fortifications in the southern German area, also housing prominent prisoners. In 1333, Hohenems was granted city rights, which were not realized. In 1560, Emperor Ferdinand I elevated Hohenems to a county. By the end of the 18th century, the city gained additional fame through the discovery of significant manuscripts of the Nibelungenlied. In 1765, Hohenems came under the rule of the Habsburgs, who held the title of Count of Hohenems. In 1861, Hohenems became part of the newly founded province of Vorarlberg.
Today, Hohenems presents itself as a city with about 17,668 inhabitants, characterized by a rich cultural life. Notably, the Schubertiade music festival has brought international recognition to the city. The Hohenems Palace, once the residence of the counts, is a central historical landmark that reflects the cultural significance of the city.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. On the valley floor around Bregenz the southern horizon is low (1 to 8 degrees), but the Pfänder rises in the east: from the city centre it reaches 15.7 degrees and costs morning sun rather than midday sun. On the slopes (Thalbach 17, Fluh up to 25 degrees) and in the south of the market it counts for much more, most of all in Hohenems (29.6 degrees to the south-east) and in Feldkirch-Tisis, where the southern horizon at 22.1 degrees stands above the winter sun of 19.1 degrees.
