Feldkirch

History & character

From Settlement to the Secret Capital

Feldkirch has its roots dating back to late Roman times, when a settlement with a church already existed. The name Feldkirch derives from the St. Petronilla Church and originally referred to the settlement in present-day Altenstadt. The development of the city began in the 9th century, and it was first documented as a city in 1218. Feldkirch benefited from its strategically advantageous location at important trade routes, which fostered commerce and prosperity. The citizens secured their freedoms in 1376, leading to cultural development and the founding of a Latin school. Over the centuries, the city came under Habsburg rule and was shaped by various military conflicts, including the Appenzeller Wars and the battle in the Second Coalition War in 1799. Today, Feldkirch is the second-largest city in Vorarlberg and hosts numerous institutions, including the regional court and the largest regional hospital. The city is often referred to as the 'secret capital' and offers a blend of historical architecture and modern living, making it an attractive place to live in the Bregenz region.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. On the valley floor around Bregenz the southern horizon is low (1 to 8 degrees), but the Pfänder rises in the east: from the city centre it reaches 15.7 degrees and costs morning sun rather than midday sun. On the slopes (Thalbach 17, Fluh up to 25 degrees) and in the south of the market it counts for much more, most of all in Hohenems (29.6 degrees to the south-east) and in Feldkirch-Tisis, where the southern horizon at 22.1 degrees stands above the winter sun of 19.1 degrees.
