History & character
From Early Mention to Independence
Meiningen is a municipality in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg, first documented in 1127. The place, originally known as Maningus/Maningas, became part of the lordship of Feldkirch in 1390 and gained independence as its own parish in 1610. The Habsburgs ruled the region alternately from Tyrol and Vorderösterreich. From 1805 to 1814, Meiningen was part of Bavaria before returning to Austria. Since the founding of Vorarlberg in 1861, Meiningen has belonged to this federal state. After World War II, the municipality was part of the French occupation zone in Austria from 1945 to 1955. Today, Meiningen is located at an altitude of 425 m above sea level on the Rhine, which marks the border to Switzerland. The municipality has a rural character, with an area of 5.37 square kilometers, a significant portion of which is used for agriculture.
