History & character
From Alemanni to the Market Town of Hard
Around 700 AD, the first settlement of Alemanni began in the area of today's Mittelweiherburg. About 500 years later, around 1200, forests near Lake Constance were cleared, leading to the establishment of the new village of Hard, which means "forest" in Old High German. In 1249, Hard was first mentioned in a protection letter from Pope Innocent IV. In 1451, Hard came under Austrian control when Margravine Elisabeth sold half of the County of Montfort-Bregenz. The first village school was mentioned in 1620, and in 1794 the first textile factory opened, marking the beginning of industrialization. In 1905, Hard was granted the status of a market town and received a municipal coat of arms. Today, with around 13,800 inhabitants, Hard is the second-largest municipality in the Bregenz district and is beautifully situated on the southern shore of Lake Constance, surrounded by European protected areas.

Climate & environment
On hot summer days, local cooling matters. Water close by cools the surroundings noticeably.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. On the valley floor around Bregenz the southern horizon is low (1 to 8 degrees), but the Pfänder rises in the east: from the city centre it reaches 15.7 degrees and costs morning sun rather than midday sun. On the slopes (Thalbach 17, Fluh up to 25 degrees) and in the south of the market it counts for much more, most of all in Hohenems (29.6 degrees to the south-east) and in Feldkirch-Tisis, where the southern horizon at 22.1 degrees stands above the winter sun of 19.1 degrees.
