History & character
From Lutaraha to the Market Town of Lauterach
Lauterach, formerly spelled Lautrach, has its roots in the Rhine delta, where a Celtic coin depot was discovered around 100 BC. The first documented mention as 'Lutaraha' dates back to the year 853. Over the centuries, the governance of the area changed, as it belonged to the Hofsteig region until 1806 and then was under Bavarian control before returning to Austria. Lauterach was elevated to a market town in 1985. The development of the area is also illustrated by a record from 1808 noting 790 inhabitants and 157 houses. From 1835 to 1841, there was a spa in the Lerchenau district, which had to close after a few years. Today, Lauterach is a market town with about 10,670 residents, situated between Bregenz and Dornbirn in the Vorarlberg Rhine valley. Shaped by its history, Lauterach offers a tranquil living environment with proximity to nature and the surrounding cities.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. On the valley floor around Bregenz the southern horizon is low (1 to 8 degrees), but the Pfänder rises in the east: from the city centre it reaches 15.7 degrees and costs morning sun rather than midday sun. On the slopes (Thalbach 17, Fluh up to 25 degrees) and in the south of the market it counts for much more, most of all in Hohenems (29.6 degrees to the south-east) and in Feldkirch-Tisis, where the southern horizon at 22.1 degrees stands above the winter sun of 19.1 degrees.
