History & character
From Roman Furt to Market Town
Wolfurt is a market municipality in the Bregenz district, named after the Roman military and trade road that crossed the Bregenzer Ache here. Around the year 500, the Alemanni established two farms that later expanded as communal cooperatives. The name Wolfurt first appeared around 1226 when an influential knightly family was active in the region. Over the centuries, Wolfurt changed hands several times until it was sold to the Abbey of Mehrerau in the 15th century. In the 19th century, Wolfurt became an independent municipality and benefited from the emerging textile industry, which provided many jobs but often under poor conditions. Today, Wolfurt is a vibrant community characterized by its diverse landscape, blending rural and urban elements.
