History & character
From Garmansbuoch to Modern Municipality
Buch was first documented in 1335 as 'Garmansbuoch' and formed part of the municipality of Steußberg together with Bildstein. Over the centuries, the village developed, with a chapel built in 1484 and a chapel established as a branch church of Wolfurt in 1506. In 1760, Buch became an independent parish. The Habsburgs ruled the area alternately from Tyrol and Vorderösterreich before Buch belonged to the Kingdom of Bavaria from 1805 to 1814. After returning to Austria in 1814, Buch became part of the newly established federal state of Vorarlberg in 1861. Until 1983, the village was connected to the Bregenzerwaldbahn, contributing to its accessibility to surrounding regions. Today, Buch is a small, quiet community in the Bregenz district with 586 residents, characterized by its natural surroundings and agricultural land use.
