History & character
From Clearing to Settlement History
Alberschwende, whose name derives from a clearing (Schwende) by an Alberich, was first mentioned in a document in 1227. Before settlement, the area was shaped by ice ages that significantly influenced the landscape. About 24,000 years ago, the Rhine and Ill glaciers covered the present-day municipality. With the melting of the glaciers, wetlands and moors formed, which are still preserved today. The Romans likely used the area as a hunting ground, while Celtic tribes had already settled the slopes of the Rhine valley earlier. Permanent settlement of Alberschwende began after the turmoil of the migrations, and the region was explored by the Goths and later by the Franks. Alberschwende served as an important point in the settlement of the Bregenzerwald and is older than many settlements in the surrounding area. Today, Alberschwende presents itself as a quiet municipality in the Bregenz region, characterized by a natural environment and offering views of the alpine landscape.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. On the valley floor around Bregenz the southern horizon is low (1 to 8 degrees), but the Pfänder rises in the east: from the city centre it reaches 15.7 degrees and costs morning sun rather than midday sun. On the slopes (Thalbach 17, Fluh up to 25 degrees) and in the south of the market it counts for much more, most of all in Hohenems (29.6 degrees to the south-east) and in Feldkirch-Tisis, where the southern horizon at 22.1 degrees stands above the winter sun of 19.1 degrees.
