Schwarzenberg

History & character

From Self-Governance to Modern Community

Schwarzenberg, first mentioned in 1270 as "Swa(r)zinberch", is located in the Bregenz district of Vorarlberg. The Habsburgs governed the region alternately from Tyrol and Vorderösterreich, while the Bregenzerwälder enjoyed extensive self-governance for a long time. After various political affiliations, including a period under Bavarian rule from 1805 to 1814, Schwarzenberg became part of the newly established federal state of Vorarlberg in 1861. From 1945, the town was part of the French occupation zone in Austria. The annual Schwarzenberg market, which has been trading cattle and cheese since around 1594, reflects the regional tradition. Today, the community is characterized by a hilly, mixed-wooded landscape, featuring old farmhouses and a preserved hamlet structure. Despite construction activity in recent decades, Schwarzenberg retains its rural character.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. On the valley floor around Bregenz the southern horizon is low (1 to 8 degrees), but the Pfänder rises in the east: from the city centre it reaches 15.7 degrees and costs morning sun rather than midday sun. On the slopes (Thalbach 17, Fluh up to 25 degrees) and in the south of the market it counts for much more, most of all in Hohenems (29.6 degrees to the south-east) and in Feldkirch-Tisis, where the southern horizon at 22.1 degrees stands above the winter sun of 19.1 degrees.
