History & character
From Hermitage to Community Andelsbuch
Andelsbuch, located in the Mittelbregenzerwald, has a name derived from a personal name and refers to the word for beech forest. In the 11th century, the hermit Diedo settled here and founded a cell and a chapel. A few years later, the monastery of St. Peter in Andelsbuch was established, which played a significant role in the region until the 12th century. The self-administration of the peasantry, known as the Wälderrepublik, developed over the centuries, and in 1397 the first documented court day took place in Andelsbuch. Under the Habsburgs in the 14th century, the community experienced a tumultuous history characterized by freedoms and self-governance.
Today, Andelsbuch is a vibrant community with around 2650 inhabitants. The scenic beauty and central location in the Bregenzerwald make the place an attractive residential area. The tranquil surroundings, characterized by forests and mountains, invite numerous recreational activities and offer a high quality of life.
