History & character
From Anderegge to the Market Town of Egg
Egg was first mentioned in a document in 1275 as "Anderegge" and served as the seat of the High Court of the Inner Bregenzerwald until the end of the "Wälderrepublik". The Habsburgs ruled the area alternately from Tyrol and Vorderösterreich. After a period under Bavarian rule, Egg returned to Austria in 1814 and has been part of the federal state of Vorarlberg since its establishment in 1861. In the Biedermeier period, Egg gained fame for its healing springs, which were used for various ailments. A tragic event in recent history was the fire disaster at the "Vinzenzheim" nursing home in 2008, which claimed several lives. In 2020, Egg was elevated to a market town, further enhancing the status and significance of the area. Today, Egg presents itself as the most populous and largest municipality in the Bregenzerwald, offering a mix of agricultural land, forests, and alpine pastures.
