History & character
From First Mention to Modern Municipality
Lingenau, first documented in 1227 as "Lindigenowe", is the oldest settlement in the Vorderer Bregenzerwald. For a long time, the area belonged to the Klostergut of Mehrerau. Until World War II, the Bad Hohl existed here, where an iron-rich spring was utilized. Lingenau was subject to changing authorities, including the Habsburgs, and was temporarily part of Bavaria before becoming part of the Austrian province of Vorarlberg in 1861. From 1902 to 1983, Lingenau was connected to the Bregenzerwaldbahn, contributing to the development of the area. After World War II, Lingenau was part of the French occupation zone in Austria. Today, the municipality, with 1588 residents, is a quiet and nature-oriented residential area in the Bregenzerwald, surrounded by forested areas and a member of the Naturpark project Nagelfluhkette.
