History & character
From Farms to a City Center
Dornbirn, first mentioned in 895 as Torrinpuirron, developed from a small settlement into the largest municipality between the Alpine Rhine and the Arlberg. Over the centuries, the ownership of the area changed until it became Austrian in 1380. Significant economic impulses came to Dornbirn in the late 19th century with the flourishing textile industry, which led to rapid growth. In 1901, Dornbirn was officially granted city status. The repurchase of jurisdiction in the 17th century and the redemption from Ems in the 18th century are notable events in the city's history that ensured a degree of autonomy for its citizens. Today, Dornbirn is an economic center in northern Vorarlberg and an important transport hub with a variety of trade, commerce, and educational institutions.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. On the valley floor around Bregenz the southern horizon is low (1 to 8 degrees), but the Pfänder rises in the east: from the city centre it reaches 15.7 degrees and costs morning sun rather than midday sun. On the slopes (Thalbach 17, Fluh up to 25 degrees) and in the south of the market it counts for much more, most of all in Hohenems (29.6 degrees to the south-east) and in Feldkirch-Tisis, where the southern horizon at 22.1 degrees stands above the winter sun of 19.1 degrees.
