Schwarzach

History & character

From First Mention to Modern Community

Schwarzach, first mentioned in 1249 as "Swarzahe", has a long history closely linked to the settlement of the Bregenz Forest. The area was once part of the Niedergericht Hofsteig and underwent various political affiliations over the centuries, including the division of the County of Bregenz in 1338. In the 19th century, the production and trade of whetstones was a significant economic sector that employed many residents. The infrastructural development, particularly road construction, improved the area's connectivity and led to the establishment of facilities such as a primary school in 1774 and a post office in 1859. The municipality of Schwarzach became part of the newly founded province of Vorarlberg in 1918 and has since developed continuously.

Today, Schwarzach presents itself as a quiet municipality in the Bregenz district, characterized by its natural surroundings and an active village life. With a modern village center created in 2010, Schwarzach offers its residents a pleasant living atmosphere. The scenic beauty of the surroundings, especially the forested areas, contributes to the character of the place.

Climate & environment

On hot summer days, local cooling matters. Water close by cools the surroundings noticeably.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. On the valley floor around Bregenz the southern horizon is low (1 to 8 degrees), but the Pfänder rises in the east: from the city centre it reaches 15.7 degrees and costs morning sun rather than midday sun. On the slopes (Thalbach 17, Fluh up to 25 degrees) and in the south of the market it counts for much more, most of all in Hohenems (29.6 degrees to the south-east) and in Feldkirch-Tisis, where the southern horizon at 22.1 degrees stands above the winter sun of 19.1 degrees.
