History & character

From First Mention to Pilgrimage Community

Bildstein is a municipality in the Bregenz district of Vorarlberg, first documented in 1379. The name of the municipality changed until 1857, when the current name was officially adopted. Bildstein was part of Bavaria from 1805 to 1814 and became an independent political municipality during this time. Since 1814, the area has belonged to Austria again. The Habsburgs ruled the places in Vorarlberg alternately from Tyrol and Vorderösterreich. The municipality is known beyond the region for the pilgrimage church in the town center, which is prominently visible. Today, Bildstein is situated at an altitude of 659 meters, surrounded by wooded areas and the highest point, Schneiderkopf, at 971 meters. With 768 inhabitants, the character of the locality has been preserved while also being a significant religious site and a quiet residential area.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. On the valley floor around Bregenz the southern horizon is low (1 to 8 degrees), but the Pfänder rises in the east: from the city centre it reaches 15.7 degrees and costs morning sun rather than midday sun. On the slopes (Thalbach 17, Fluh up to 25 degrees) and in the south of the market it counts for much more, most of all in Hohenems (29.6 degrees to the south-east) and in Feldkirch-Tisis, where the southern horizon at 22.1 degrees stands above the winter sun of 19.1 degrees.
