History & character

From Chapel to Parish Church Fluh

In 1666, a chapel was built in Fluh as a branch of Bregenz, which took on significant importance in the community over the years. In 1820, it was elevated to an Expositur church. The new church, designed by architect Gabriel Mallaun, was constructed between 1846 and 1847, with the consecration taking place in 1849. In 1872, the pilgrimage church was granted the status of a parish church. The architecture is characterized by a nave under a hipped roof, which connects to a low choir with a gabled roof. A prominent east tower with round-arched sound openings and a spire defines the church's appearance. The interior is richly adorned with artworks, including frescoes and altar paintings, emphasizing the religious significance of Fluh. Today, the parish church of St. Wendelin is a valued landmark of the community and is protected as a historical monument.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. On the valley floor around Bregenz the southern horizon is low (1 to 8 degrees), but the Pfänder rises in the east: from the city centre it reaches 15.7 degrees and costs morning sun rather than midday sun. On the slopes (Thalbach 17, Fluh up to 25 degrees) and in the south of the market it counts for much more, most of all in Hohenems (29.6 degrees to the south-east) and in Feldkirch-Tisis, where the southern horizon at 22.1 degrees stands above the winter sun of 19.1 degrees.
