History & character
From the Bronze Age to the Consulate
Lochau has a long history that dates back to the Late Bronze Age when the Wellensteinhöhle on the Pfänder was temporarily inhabited. The first documented mentions come from the year 1186. The area became part of the rule of Bregenz in 1523 and was the scene of battles during the Thirty Years' War. The Habsburgs governed Lochau alternately from Tyrol and Further Austria. After a brief period under Bavarian rule from 1805 to 1814, Lochau has belonged to the Austrian federal state of Vorarlberg since 1861. In April 1945, a subcamp of the Dachau concentration camp was established in Lochau. After the war, the area was part of the French occupation zone in Austria until 1955. A significant infrastructural change occurred in 1980 with the opening of the Pfändertunnel, which reduced traffic congestion. Today, Lochau is a municipality with 6,711 inhabitants, nestled between Lake Constance and the Pfänder. The surroundings are characterized by wooded areas and a scenic location by the lake, attracting both locals and visitors alike.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. On the valley floor around Bregenz the southern horizon is low (1 to 8 degrees), but the Pfänder rises in the east: from the city centre it reaches 15.7 degrees and costs morning sun rather than midday sun. On the slopes (Thalbach 17, Fluh up to 25 degrees) and in the south of the market it counts for much more, most of all in Hohenems (29.6 degrees to the south-east) and in Feldkirch-Tisis, where the southern horizon at 22.1 degrees stands above the winter sun of 19.1 degrees.
