History & character
From Roman Road to Market Town
Hörbranz has a long history that dates back to late antiquity when a burgus was built in Betzentobel to protect the border. The town is located on the Roman road from Brigantium to Cambodunum and was first mentioned in documents in 802. The first secured mention of the current name dates back to 1226. In 1523, Hörbranz became part of Austria along with a section of Bregenz. The town belonged to Bavaria from 1805 to 1814 before returning to Austria. Since the establishment of the federal state of Vorarlberg in 1861, Hörbranz has been part of it. In 2008, Hörbranz was designated a market town. Today, Hörbranz is located in the Bregenz district, north of Lake Constance, and offers a mix of agricultural land, gardens, and forests. The geography is characterized by the slopes of the Pfänder mountain range, which rise to the east of the municipality. With around 6700 inhabitants, Hörbranz is a small but vibrant community that offers both rural charm and proximity to nature.
