History & character
From Roman Road to Hohenweiler Municipality
Hohenweiler is the northernmost municipality of the Austrian federal state of Vorarlberg and was first documented in 802. The village lies along the Roman road Kempten–Bregenz, whose route largely corresponds to today's Allgäustraße. Historical finds, such as the remains of a Roman burgus near Gmündmühle, testify to Hohenweiler's significance in antiquity. Over the centuries, the region's rule changed among the Habsburgs, Bavaria, and Austria. Since the establishment of the federal state of Vorarlberg in 1861, Hohenweiler has belonged to Austria. After World War II, the village was part of the French occupation zone until 1955.
Today, Hohenweiler presents itself as a quiet municipality in the Bregenz region, surrounded by a natural environment where 44 percent of the area is forested. Particularly in the eastern part, the Rohrachschlucht has developed into a primeval forest-like nature reserve and is part of a European protected area. Over the years, the municipality has steadily developed, offering its approximately 1406 residents an attractive living environment.
