History & character
From Trade Hub to Lakeside Community
The name Fußach is first mentioned in 840 as Fossonas, and the village experienced its first heyday in the Middle Ages. Fußach was one of the most significant trading hubs in the Lake Constance region, where ship and cart drivers were already active in the 11th century. In the 15th century, the courier service Spehler & Vis took over the transport of goods and travelers, later leading to the establishment of the Gebrüder Weiss shipping company. The Zuschg, a warehouse for cargo handling, serves as a reminder of this era. The heyday ended around 1850 with the construction of the Bregenz harbor and the railway line Lindau–Bludenz, shifting the main occupations to agriculture and fishing. In 1772, Fußach became an independent political municipality. Flood risk was a longstanding challenge for the community, mitigated by the Rhine diversion in 1900. Today, Fußach is a quiet community by Lake Constance, reflecting its historical significance.
