History & character
From First Mention to Modern Community
Höchst was first mentioned in a document on June 19, 805. The name 'Hostadio' refers to an early donation to the Abbey of St. Gall. In 881, Höchst appeared as 'Hostetharro marcha', which denotes the mark of Höchst. Over the centuries, Höchst was part of various dominions, including the Montfort family and later the Habsburgs. These historical connections shaped the development of the place, which established itself as a double village between St. Margrethen and St. Johann. Over time, the once clear boundaries of the districts faded due to post-World War II settlement construction. Today, Höchst is a municipality characterized by its location in the Rhine delta and proximity to Lake Constance. With an area of 20.15 km², it not only offers a picturesque landscape but also a high recreational value through protected natural areas and a variety of rare plant and animal species.
