History & character
From Document to Modern Municipality
Gaißau was first mentioned in a document around 900 AD and was then part of the municipal district 'Mark der Höchster'. In the 14th century, the area that today comprises Gaißau was transferred to Austria through the Counts of Feldkirch. The name Gaißau emerged around 1400 and refers to a former double farm area. Throughout history, Gaißau changed ownership several times, including a period under the Abbey of St. Gallen. From 1500, Gaißau was independent and became fully part of Austria in 1798. Until 1934, the municipality was led by a mayor or headman, and thereafter a mayor took over this role. In 1930, Gaißau switched to the jurisdiction of the district authority of Bregenz for traffic reasons. In recent years, the municipality has seen a rising population and is considered the fastest-growing community within Vorarlberg.
