History & character
From the Mesolithic to a Vibrant Community
Koblach is a municipality in the Vorarlberg Rhine Valley, with a history dating back to the Mesolithic era. Settlements existed in the area around 7000 years ago, as evidenced by finds at the foot of the Kummenberg. In the Middle Ages, Koblach was a royal court of the Welfs, with Neuburg as its seat. In 1363, the castle came into the possession of the Dukes of Austria. Koblach became its own parish in 1675 and was briefly part of Bavaria between 1805 and 1814 before returning to Austria. The municipality has belonged to Austria since the founding of the federal state of Vorarlberg in 1861. In 1888, a large part of the municipality was destroyed by a Rhine flood, and from 1945 to 1955, Koblach was part of the French occupation zone in Austria.
Today, Koblach presents itself as a quiet municipality with a picturesque location between the Kummenberg and the Rhine. The five districts – Au, Dürne, Straßenhäuser, Neuburg, and Udelberg – are characterized by a harmonious blend of nature and living. The surrounding area is marked by nature reserves that serve recreation and highlight the scenic beauty of the region.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. On the valley floor around Bregenz the southern horizon is low (1 to 8 degrees), but the Pfänder rises in the east: from the city centre it reaches 15.7 degrees and costs morning sun rather than midday sun. On the slopes (Thalbach 17, Fluh up to 25 degrees) and in the south of the market it counts for much more, most of all in Hohenems (29.6 degrees to the south-east) and in Feldkirch-Tisis, where the southern horizon at 22.1 degrees stands above the winter sun of 19.1 degrees.
