History & character
From First Mention to Market Town
Götzis is first mentioned in the Rhaetian land register as Cazeses. Around the year 1000 AD, a modest village core developed near the old church. In 1375, Götzis came into the possession of the Habsburgs, and in 1694 it was granted market town status. The political separation from Altach occurred in 1801, making Götzis an independent municipality. Many Götzis men served in the military during World War I and II, which led to tragedy for the community. Today, Götzis lies in the Vorarlberg Rhine Valley, surrounded by a forested landscape and nature reserves. The character of the municipality is marked by a harmonious connection between nature and living space, making it an attractive place for families and nature lovers.
