Mäder

History & character

From the Mederen to a Modern Community

Mäder is a municipality in Vorarlberg, first mentioned in 1294 as 'in den Mederen'. In the Middle Ages, the area belonged to the Reichshof Kriessern and became part of Austria in 1513. The Habsburgs ruled the region alternately from Tyrol and Vorderösterreich. In the 19th century, Mäder was temporarily part of Bavaria and was integrated into the Rankweil-Sulz court in the Feldkirch dominion until 1806. The town was repeatedly affected by floods from the Rhine, leading to the initiation of river regulation measures in 1824. Mäder has been part of the Austrian federal state of Vorarlberg since its establishment in 1861 and was part of the French occupation zone after World War II. Today, Mäder is a vibrant community with a growing population and a positive birth and migration balance.

Real building heights (OpenStreetMap footprints with heights from the BEV laser scan), sun hours and shadows from sun position and geometry. How much of it reaches you also depends on orientation and windows. Terrain is included, from the official elevation model out to 12 km: a mountain to the south takes the winter sun just as the house opposite does. Where the sun only grazes a ridge, the figure remains an approximation. On the valley floor around Bregenz the southern horizon is low (1 to 8 degrees), but the Pfänder rises in the east: from the city centre it reaches 15.7 degrees and costs morning sun rather than midday sun. On the slopes (Thalbach 17, Fluh up to 25 degrees) and in the south of the market it counts for much more, most of all in Hohenems (29.6 degrees to the south-east) and in Feldkirch-Tisis, where the southern horizon at 22.1 degrees stands above the winter sun of 19.1 degrees.
